Exploring the Impact of Place Attachment on Residents’ Preferences for Implementing NbS in Urban Areas: A Case of Using Stormwater Recycled Through MAR in Taiyuan, China

Background: Nature-based solutions (NbS) are seen as one of the approaches to address climate-related challenges as they protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural ecosystems and are uniquely suited for urban adaptation. While NbS can be applied in various shapes and sizes, this Chapter focuses on implementing NbS to address water security challenges in urban environments, acknowledging that place attachment and community engagement from designing to implementation are critical to the success of NbS. Objectives: The primary objective of this Chapter is to investigate the implementation of NbS, particularly stormwater recycling through Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR), to augment water supply for non-potable uses in urban areas. Methods: This Chapter investigates one proposed stormwater recycling scheme in Taiyuan City, which shows extreme environmental degradation and faces severe water scarcity problems. The data were collected via a survey of urban residents using ‘WeChat Moments’. Structural Equation Modelling was performed to test the hypotheses. Results: It was found that respondents reacted positively to using treated stormwater for residential purposes to alleviate the pressure on the freshwater supply. Place attachment (measured by length of residence) was found to significantly impact residents’ preferences for treatment options, perceived health risks, perceived emotions, and social norms that relate to using treated stormwater for various residential purposes. Conclusions: The findings have important implications for decision-making about the input and scale of infrastructure investment for implementing NbS in urban areas. The study highlights the importance of place attachment and community engagement in the application of NbS.
