Commercial Si photovoltaics (PV) occupied over 95% of the total PV market in 2019. Mono-crystalline Si PV dominates 65% of the Si PV market. Being, not cost-competitive mono-crystalline Si wafers’ cost alone ascribes half of the total solar cell production cost. Si nanowire (SiNW) array cells, with excellent light confining and antireflection with short carrier transportation pathways, show daylight towards the realization of high efficiency using lower-quality Si wafers having short minority carrier diffusion lengths. All the benefits of SiNW arrays come to reality based on the realization of radial junctions. In spite of the advent of low-cost wafer-scale SiNW production technique, realization of radial junction SiNWs never happened. The focus of this research has been shifted towards the fabrication of higher diameter SiNWs, i.e. Si microwires (SiMWs) in wafer scale to realize radial junction Si solar cells. This chapter summarizes the recent development of the SiMW-based photovoltaic technologies. Different fabrication techniques developed till date for wafer-scale production of SiMWs are summarized. 摘要

The challenges faced in this direction and the prevailing difficulties in the production of these kinds of devices have also been conferred.
