With his perfect power the peerless giver and creator gave humankind [83] the concupiscible and irascible faculties for the purposes of attracting the beneficial and repulsing the harmful, which are the bases of life and continued existence. By means of concupiscence everyone attracts what is beneficial to himself no matter how harmful it may be to another, and by means of irascibility everyone avoids that which is harmful to him although it may be beneficial to another. It is obvious that the former produces inharmoniousness and creates mutual opposition and the latter produces a breakdown in the benefits of civilization, which are working for and helping one another, and a dissolution of the bond of order in the world and the continuation of the human species.

摘要
