‘Disruption’ is a term that historically has been related to the world of business where it has meant drastic changes in processes of working or product development. In this chapter, and throughout this book, however, the term is used more broadly to describe economic upheavals caused by unemployment and technological innovation, atmospheric changes such as climate change and geopolitical disturbances such as war and terrorist actions. While these disruptions are described here one by one, the argument of this chapter is that very often in their effect they intersect with each other and with the social and political contexts in which they are embedded. There is also evidence that these multiple and intersecting disruptions influence different groups of people differently, with especially negative effects on the most vulnerable people across societies.
