Spray-Coated Fe2O3 Thin Film for Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue Dye

Oxides of metals are potential components for photodegradation applications due to its biocompatibility, high stability, capability to generate charge carriers, increased lifetime, favourable optoelectronic and charge transport aspects. Iron oxide is abundant, shows high absorbance and good chemical stability which influences its photodegradation aspects. Iron oxide thin films have been coated using ferric trichloride precursor by facile spray pyrolysis method. Structural property of iron oxide is studied using X-ray diffraction that ensures the formation of single phase Fe2O3 film with highly textured growth along (021) and (400) planes. Surface morphology investigated by the field emission scanning electron microscopy shows a rice grain shaped morphology of the deposited film. The band gap of Fe2O3 thin film estimated using UV-Vis spectroscopy is found to be around 2.59 eV. Photocatalysis of methylene blue demonstrated with Fe2O3 thin film showed degradation efficiency of 88.48% after 180 min irradiation under white LED light.
