Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing of Different Materials: A Review

The layer-by-layer assembly of parts through additive manufacturing (AM) has become popular as a viable option for mass production. There are various types of AM techniques used by the industries. Depending on the various types of energy used, wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is seen as the optimal AM method for large-scale production owing to its numerous benefits, such as a larger deposition rate, lower heat input, high efficiency, and lesser raw material cost. Various kinds of material components are fabricated using the WAAM technique. The most common alloys used in WAAM are titanium, aluminium, nickel, steel, and so forth. These alloys find many uses in the automotive, marine, and aerospace industries. This article introduces WAAM and includes different techniques used in WAAM in recent years, their advantages as well as their limitations. This article also reviews the mechanical and microstructural characteristics of several metals and alloys made by using the WAAM technique.
