Coating deposition on the surface of a bulk material is a flexible, cost-efficient, and successful approach for providing extra characteristics to the bulk material, primarily to increase its functioning and service life. Cold gas dynamic spray, also known as cold spray (CS), is the only thermal deposition method in which particles are sprayed below their melting temperature, making it a solid-state processing technique. Coatings formed by this technique have distinct properties than coatings developed by other technologies. This makes the cold spray process a competitive technology for repair and potentially the manufacturing of self-standing parts. Hence, the aim of this paper is to provide an overview of cold spray coating, including bonding mechanisms, merits, and demerits. Thereafter, the microstructure, mechanical, and tribological characteristics of cold-sprayed materials are discussed. Finally, the diverse applications of cold spray coatings are explored.
