In today’s digitized healthcare landscape, ensuring the security, privacy, and interoperability of electronic health records (EHRs) is paramount, particularly within the insurance sector. This research paper explores the implementation of self-sovereign identity (SSI) principles for enhancing the management of electronic health records (EHR) in the insurance sector. Leveraging the Veramo framework for the creation and verification of verifiable credentials (VCs), our approach aims to address privacy, security, and interoperability challenges inherent in traditional EHR systems. By granting individuals control over their health data through decentralized identifiers (DIDs) and VCs, our solution facilitates secure and auditable data exchange between patients, healthcare providers, and insurers. We present a comprehensive analysis of the technical implementation, discussing key components such as DIDs, VCs, and selective disclosure mechanisms. Through this research, we contribute to the ongoing discourse on improving data management practices in healthcare, fostering trust among stakeholders, and advancing the adoption of SSI technologies in the insurance sector.
