Edible Plant Sources Containing Low and Non-toxic Levels of Tropane and Nortropane Alkaloids
摘要
Tropane alkaloids (TAs) are a unique category of alkaloids with a tropane ring in their chemical structure. They are often considered important lead compounds in pharmacology. While many people are familiar with the well-known plant sources of tropane alkaloids, there are also lesser-known plants that contain TAs, some of which may be edible or used in traditional medicine through oral consumption. This chapter primarily focuses on these edible or lesser-known plants recognized as sources of tropane alkaloids. Some nortropanes exhibited inhibitory effects on glucosidases and galactosidases at their low levels. When present at non-toxic levels, tropane alkaloids in these plants could provide beneficial health effects and contribute substantially to health protection. However, further studies in this regard are needed.
