A Dictionary of the Chinese Language is the world’s first English-Chinese and Chinese-English dictionary, containing a relatively comprehensive collection of various Chinese terms and their translations related to early Chinese law. The presentation and interpretation of Chinese legal vocabulary and concepts in A Dictionary of the Chinese Language provided a necessary environment for mutual recognition and interaction between early Chinese and Western legal cultures. However, there are also many misinterpretations and misunderstandings of Chinese law in the dictionary. On the one hand, the distortion and misrepresentation of Chinese legal culture in the dictionary stem from the objective limitations of the compiler’s Chinese language abilities, constituting unintentional misreadings. On the other hand, it results from the translators being influenced and manipulated by Western ideologies, which is a deliberate rewriting. Both contribute to the inaccurate transmission of legal cultural information and are detrimental to the “going out” of Chinese legal culture. Therefore, while vigorously promoting the global Spreading of Chinese legal culture, it is essential to reevaluate and reposition the historical value of traditional Chinese legal cultural classics and related works introduced by Western translators.
