This chapter covers the main types and characteristics of silage facilities including silo and the evolution of silage agricultural machinery. Round balers are now indispensable as ensiling machinery. Among the evolutions in silage facilities and machines, the most notable is the round baler. This chapter introduces the two types of round balers that have evolved uniquely in Japan. The first is the round baler for maize, which can bale even fine-chopped materials in response to requests from small and mid-sized dairy farms. The second is a direct-cutting round baler allowing to be harvested in muddy conditions of paddy fields, which has been developed specifically for forage rice. This chapter also introduces a silage unloader that has excellent durability and reliability due to its simple structure, it has been on the market for over 30 years since its development in Japan.
