Livestock production is on the rise in Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Laos, and Indonesia, driven by both local consumption and export markets. Roughage sources such as forage crops, agricultural by-products, and waste are the main feed resources in this region. Similar to other tropical regions, fodder production is at its peak during the rainy season and declines during the dry season. Consequently, feed availability for livestock production is limited during the dry months. To address this challenge, methods such as silage and the fermented total mixed ration are used to preserve and enhance feed quantity and quality throughout the year. However, the characteristics of tropical crops and by-products, such as low water-soluble carbohydrates and high moisture content, make it difficult to produce high-quality silage. This chapter provides an overview of livestock raising, feed resources, silage production techniques, and their utilization in Southeast Asia.
