Observation of Wear and Single Surface Crack Growth in PEEK Thrust Bearing Under Rolling Contact Fatigue in Water
摘要
In mechanical designs, Bearings are one of the important mechanical components used in various environments. Poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) polymer bearings have excellent water and chemical resistances. Because of these characteristics, PEEK polymer bearings are used in water and corrosive conditions where steal bearings can’t be used. In our previous study, Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF) tests were performed and the process of fatigue in water was reported. However, the relation between crack propagation, wear and failure under RCF in water was not clear. In this study, we focused on the relation between crack propagation and wear, in order to identify the surface crack which causes the flaking fatigue. RCF tests at 650 and 700 N in water were carried out. The surface profiles and the crack lengths were observed in these RCF tests. The wear amount at the inside of the rolling track was smaller than that at the outside. The propagation behaviour of the line cracks is divided into two groups. One is “the crack whose length is almost constant” and the other is “the crack whose length increases and then decreases to disappear as the number of cycles increases”. This means that the cracks at the inside of the rolling track tend to remain because of its low wear amount.
