Fracture Behavior of Epoxy Resin and PMMA Applied in Reparation of Concrete Crack

This study investigated and compared the fracture behavior of two resins, epoxy and PMMA, commonly used to repair cracks in concrete. The SEN concrete beam was used to conduct three-point bending test to examine the performance of concrete beams after crack repair. The design widths of concrete cracks being repaired are 1, 5, and 10 mm. The fracture properties of concrete, including the fracture toughness KIC and the fracture energy GF determined from the methods proposed by RILEM, were evaluated and compared before cracking and after repair. Four sand contents were used for both types of resin and mortar: 0, 10, 20 and 40% by volume. The test results showed that the loading capacity and fracture toughness of the repaired concrete beam increased with the sand content. Moreover, pure epoxy resin gives the repaired concrete better strength and fracture toughness, while PMMA performs greater fracture energy.
