Virtual Reality Experience of Newton’s Rings: User Evaluation and Insights

Several state-of-the-art innovations are currently integrated into physics education to enhance learning outcomes and experiences. This study developed a virtual reality (VR) application simulating the Newton’s Rings experiment, utilizing hand tracking for user interaction to create an engaging and interactive learning experience. We evaluated the application’s usability with sixteen undergraduate students, evenly split by gender, who interacted with the VR application for 10–15 min. The usability was assessed using the System Usability Scale (SUS), a recognized tool for measuring user satisfaction. The application achieved an impressive SUS score of 86.56, indicating a positive reception and highlighting its potential as an educational tool in the physics curriculum. Following the VR training, students provided feedback, noting the application was intuitive, engaging, and effective in illustrating the concepts of Newton’s Rings. Their seamless navigation further underscored its effectiveness. This study emphasizes the importance of integrating advanced technologies like VR in education to improve learning outcomes and student engagement, equipping students with essential skills such as computational thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving for future success.
