Comparison of Inertial Measurement Unit with Motion Tracking System for the Estimation of Human Shoulder Range of Motion

People with musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) have conditions that affect their muscles, bones, joints, and connective tissues. They are characterized by stiffness and pain often limiting movement across the joint. For all the above conditions, the treatment varies depending on the cause and severity of the symptoms. There are certain therapies that help in managing the pain, maintain strength and improve the person’s day to day activities; these include physical therapy and occupational therapy. Inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based systems are widely used for range of motion (ROM) measurements that is crucial for monitoring the effectiveness of the course of rehabilitation. In the present study, the performance characteristics of a low-cost IMU is compared with a commercially available motion tracking system (MTS). The results suggest that the low-cost IMU system’s accuracy in measuring ROM closely matches with the commercial MTS. However, measurement accuracy greatly depends on the sensor orientation and placement, specifically with respect to ROM measurements.
