Applications of Magnetic Materials for Common-Mode Noise Suppression in Three-Phase PWM Inverter-Fed Motor Drive Systems

Magnetic components often occupy a significant volume in electromagnetic interference filters. To address this, power electronics (PE) researchers have proposed various noise suppression techniques to reduce the size and number of magnetic components in these filters. The role of magnetic components varies depending on the suppression technique, requiring an optimal design that considers the magnetic material’s properties, such as complex permeability, saturation flux density, and iron loss. Moreover, improving the magnetic properties tailored to specific applications is crucial for further miniaturizing magnetic components in noise suppression techniques. To bridge the gap between PE and magnetic material researchers, this chapter reviews common-mode noise suppression techniques in three-phase pulse-width modulation inverter-fed motor drive systems and the required characteristics of magnetic materials.
