The development of unconventional water resources is necessary to bridge the gap between supply and demand. Wastewater from homes is one of these resources. Therefore, treated wastewater is an excellent non-traditional resource for alleviating water scarcity, particularly in arid regions. Due to agricultural growth and rising drinking water demand, water supplies are becoming more and more limited in many arid and semi-arid locations. Although sewage treatment by conventional means is very effective, it requires high cost of energy, skilled personnel, huge budget for engineering work such as capital cost, the necessary maintenance and operation. These represent obstacles towards implementing such methods to be applied in rural and urban areas. Simple, effective, and reasonably priced on-site wastewater treatment methods are essential. Using artificial wetlands as a phytoremediation technology is a good choice for this. At a fair price, the implementation of such a system will address several environmental issues. Random releases of untreated or inadequately treated wastewater are one of these issues, which can harm the ecosystem, worsen surface water channel eutrophication, and seriously harm human health. Egypt receives 55.5 billion cubic meters of water annually from the Nile River, compared to its annual water demand of over 114 billion cubic meters. About 20 billion cubic meters of treated wastewater are produced annually through reuse, which is a respectable percentage if done properly.
