The Role of Insect and Insect Enzymes in Environment with References to Plastic Waste Management

Over time, the exploitation of natural resources has accelerated to meet the demand due to the global explosion of the human population. To corroborate with such demand, revolution is necessitated in various industrial sectors. Such a revolution is associated with the production of various organic and inorganic chemicals that pollute our habitats. Pollution associated with plastic, heavy metals, petroleum, pesticides, etc., is alarming for our blue planet. Efforts are being made to use insects and their enzymes to mitigate these hazardous pollutants. Insects, being the most varied group of organisms, are able to colonize almost all ecological niches on Earth. To adapt to such diverse and occasionally extreme habitats, insects have evolved varied biological and chemical systems. Enzymes are pivotal in these systems, enabling insects to digest food from different sources. To overcome metabolic limitations, insects have established various adaptations, including microbial symbiotic associations as an evolutionary approach. These symbionts particularly the gut symbionts contribute significantly to overcoming the metabolic limitation of their host. It is possible through increasing and diverging their food digestibility, and synthesis of various essential metabolites. The insect-associated enzymes are getting more and more attention in various biotechnology fields, including bioremediation. Such technology for treating pollutants through biological systems is an important technology from both an economical and environmental point of view. The present effort of searching effective fields, particularly plastic-degrading insects and their enzymes including the scope of the use of native or genetically modified microorganisms for the degradation of plastics, is a potent technology for bioremediation.
