Circular Economy of Municipal Solid Waste Management to Promote Sustainable Environment for Saudi Arabia Future Cities

The development of digital infrastructure for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) requires a comprehensive multi-criteria approach. There are many aspects involved in this development, such as data collection, analysis, route planning, optimization, decision support, classification of waste, etc. This work is proposed to develop the baseline (supporting supply chain tracking and data analytics), in different stages such as waste collection (including route optimization), segregation (including waste identification), and treatment (including recycling, remanufacturing, composting, and reconditioning). AI and IoT-enabled systems, spatial technologies/real-time GIS and GPS, big data, analytics, cloud computing underpinned by blockchain technology are pivotal components to deliver effective and AI-based MSW model for Saudi Arabia future cities. There are numerous movements with sector-leaders in MSW, such as TONOMUS – NEOM, Saudi Investment Recycling Company (SIRC), Riyadh Municipality. The key transformational contribution of this project is an establishment and assessment of a highly connected circular supply chain that contributes to radical whole lifecycle decarburization and waste reduction within municipalities of the Saudi Arabia. We believe that this kind of development will also have potential for commercialization and possible integration with other city systems that support a holistic digital business model for organic waste management. Our future strategy is to create a collaborative work between academia and government with close consultation with our industry partners to develop municipal solid waste sector as well as new digitally enabled circular economy models.
