This research explores the concept of Jugaad, a resourceful and frugal approach to problem-solving, particularly in resource-constrained communities. The study investigates the triggers, mediators, and consequences of employing Jugaad in architectural practices within lower socio-economic neighbourhoods. Through surveys and in-depth interviews with individuals who have applied Jugaad in their homes, the research identifies the key factors that trigger and mediate Jugaad in architecture, as well as its resulting consequences. The study finds that economic constraints, needs, and environmental conditions are major drivers of Jugaad, while mediators such as available materials, local expertise, and community support facilitate its implementation. The consequences of Jugaad include cost savings, enhanced functionality, and environmental benefits, though concerns regarding durability, safety, and sustainability persist. This research highlights Jugaad as a form of grassroots innovation that not only provides immediate solutions but also has the potential to inform more sustainable, inclusive architectural practices. The findings suggest that future research should focus on formalizing Jugaad strategies while preserving their inherent flexibility. This study calls for architects and policymakers to incorporate Jugaad principles into design processes, fostering more adaptable, community-centered approaches to architecture.
