A 9-month-old female infant was diagnosed with congenital heart disease via fetal echocardiography. After the second stage of open-heart surgery, she developed refractory ventricular fibrillation. After proactive drug treatment and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support, thrombocytopenia and multiple organ failure still occurred. Considering the poor prognosis of the child, her family members ultimately decided to give up treatment and donate the child’s organs. During the organ retrieval process, anesthesiologists participated in the evaluation, transportation, and clinical management of the child’s organ function. The anesthesiologists also need to follow the standard procedures and technical norms to ensure the quality of the retrieved organs. They also need to be aware of the human organ retrieval and allocation system and take responsibility for promoting the healthy and sustainable development of human organ donation and transplantation.
