Application of Acoustic Technology in Marine Engineering Inspection

Offshore platforms are widely used in the exploration and development of marine oil and gas resources. Due to the combined effects of various random loads such as sea wind, waves, sea ice and tides over long periods, coupled with the marine environment corrosion, material aging and material defects and a variety of cumulative damage, reducing the overall resistance of the platform components, seriously affecting the safety and durability of the structure. Due to the harsh working environment of the marine platform and the variety of background noise, the traditional non-destructive testing methods are not ideal for monitoring the structure of the marine platform (Huajun and Hezhen in Eng Mech 21:113–117, 2004 [1]). Acoustic emission (AE) technology has a broad application prospect in offshore platforms due to its high sensitivity, all-weather 24 h non-stop inspection and other characteristics. During the service period of the offshore platform, it will be affected by various factors such as seawater and marine organisms, platform operation and life, and weather. In the AE monitoring of the platform, all kinds of damages, such as cracks and corrosion, are the focus of monitoring; while the impact and friction produced by personnel operation and marine environment on the platform will interfere with the normal fault signals, which should be weakened and eliminated in the monitoring process.
