Contain-Based Sewage Monitoring System Using IoT

Sewage systems face various issues, such as blockages from debris and grease, pipe corrosion, and groundwater infiltration. Ageing infrastructure and tree root intrusion can cause leaks and damage, while power failures and capacity issues lead to backups and overflows. Additionally, flooding, inadequate maintenance, and improper disposal of industrial waste further complicate sewage management, requiring regular upkeep and system upgrades. This paper introduces a pioneering contain-based sewage monitoring system leveraging the Internet of Things. The system continually monitors variables, including pH levels, temperature, flow rate, and pollutant concentrations in real time with the help of the ESP32 IoT development board and an intelligent sensor network embedded in sewage containment units. ThingSpeak analyses a centralised cloud platform, and data is wirelessly sent. Concurrently, switches detect the status of manholes, determining whether they are open or closed. All data, including manhole statuses, is wirelessly transmitted to a centralised cloud-based platform for comprehensive analysis and decision-making. Technology is more accurate, scalable, and economical than conventional techniques. It lowers the hazards to the environment and public health by enabling prompt actions and the proactive detection of problems like blockages or contamination leaks by providing real-time insights. A comprehensive answer to the problems associated with urban sewage management is also provided by predictive maintenance and optimisation, made possible by modern analytics and machine learning algorithms. These factors also improve operational effectiveness and resource allocation.
