This study sought to find a new technique to address the language barrier challenge faced by Sesotho-speaking adults in the Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) environment. Therefore, this study developed a prototype intelligent tutoring system (ITS) that presents a technology course in Sesotho to facilitate training for Sesotho-speaking ABET participants. Previous study results have shown that ITS can improve teaching and learning in various disciplines. However, these studies mainly focused on high school and university students and the ITSs were developed primarily in English. Therefore, little is known about the integration of ITS into the ABET environment, hence the need for this study. In this study, data were collected using a developed ITS prototype, user testing tasks, and questionnaires. The analysed data results showed that participants were able to successfully use the ITS prototype to convey a technology course in Sesotho and thus achieve their training goals. They were also excited about the interactive experience with the developed ITS prototype. Therefore, it is concluded that the ITS prototype presenting a technology course in Sesotho can support and enhance computer training experiences for Sesotho-speaking ABET participants. Based on this finding, it can be said that the presentation of technological content through ITS in Sesotho can be viewed as a potential tool to address the language barriers faced by Sesotho-speaking ABET participants in Mangaung, Free State.

Satisfaction of Adult Basic Education and Training Participants with the Use of an Intelligent Tutoring System to Learn a Technology Course in a Local Language
