The Interplay of Positive Activating Thinking and Effective Second Language Learning
摘要
Effective second language learning involves a combination of cognitive and affective factors, including language aptitude, motivation, learning strategies, and positive activating thinking. Positive Activating Thinking can create a significant impact in second language learning through the development of a growth mindset. Positive activating thinking can help individuals to overcome negative emotions such as anxiety and self-doubt, which can hinder the process of second language learning. By focusing on their strengths, capabilities, and Self-efficacy beliefs, the pedagogical intervention can address their low self-esteem and develop a positive attitude towards language learning. Moreover, the human brain is innately wired to attend to the negative aspects far more than the positive ones, naturally leading individuals to fixate on their challenges. Inculcating positive activating thinking in the language classroom directs the learners’ attention to overall positive mindset, which helps the human brain to choose the available positive factors by deactivating the negative influence. Drawing insights from educational psychology, this chapter aims to help train the learner’s thinking by revitalising the learners’ affect, cognition, and language in a language classroom and build requisite skillset that will help them cope up in workplace situations. It also explores the significant role of a teacher in instilling positive activating thoughts, while administering tasks in a second language learning classroom.
