The Potential of Biophilic Urban Planning for Climate Resilience Cities in Africa: The Case of Dakar Metropolitan Region

In the face of the challenges posed by climate change and rapid urbanization, particularly in the Global South, it is essential to create cities resilient to the complex impacts of climate change. This chapter examines the case of Dakar and other African examples to explore the integration of biophilic design principles into urban planning and construction practices as a novel approach to fostering healthy buildings and communities within climate-resilient cities. Drawing on studies and concrete experiences, the chapter demonstrates that biophilic design, inspired by the intrinsic connection between humans and nature, offers a promising pathway toward sustainable urban development. This study presents practical examples and real-world projects in the Dakar region, as well as other African contexts, illustrating a paradigm shift toward more sustainable and climate-resilient cities. It also highlights innovative design and planning strategies that incorporate biophilic elements such as green roofs, vertical gardens, and natural lighting to improve indoor air quality, reduce energy consumption, and promote well-being. Finally, the chapter discusses the potential of biophilic design to create healthier and more resilient urban environments, with a particular focus on Dakar, and addresses its impact on community well-being, energy efficiency, and ecological sustainability, while explaining how these strategies can be extended and adapted to different urban contexts, particularly in Africa.
