Development and Test Study of a New Impact Barrier

The European side impact barrier which was developed more than 20 years ago have become difficult to meet the stiffness and structural characteristics of vehicles in China vehicle crash tests. It cannot represent the typical vehicle model. In this paper, the new side impact barrier is designed and developed independently based on the traffic accident data and typical vehicle data. The appearance dimension, mechanical performance and other specifications of the new barrier are introduced. With the typical target vehicles, the car to car side impact tests are conducted and the performance is verified. And the difference comparison indexes are established to improve and optimize the side impact barrier. So that the barrier test results are in accord with the car to car crash test results. The new impact barrier that meets the requirement is finally launched.
