Research Methods
摘要
This chapter details the research methods used to examine the construction of ASEAN’s image in Chinese mainstream media. The study selects four leading media outlets—People’s Daily, Xinhua News Agency, China Central Television (CCTV), and China National Radio (CNR)—as primary data sources. Data collection is conducted using Python-based web scraping techniques to systematically gather relevant news articles and reports. For data analysis, the study employs Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling to identify dominant themes in media discourse, uncovering patterns in how ASEAN is framed. Additionally, sentiment analysis is applied to evaluate the overall tone of media coverage, determining whether reports present ASEAN in a positive, negative, or neutral light. By combining these methods, the study provides a comprehensive understanding of how ASEAN is portrayed across different media platforms. The results derived from these analyses contribute to a deeper insight into the media’s role in shaping China-ASEAN relations. This methodological framework ensures an objective and data-driven assessment, offering valuable empirical evidence to support discussions on media influence and international image construction.
