Understanding Design Education: A Study of Parental Views and Expectations
摘要
Design education in India was growing steadily till 2004 with only a handful of institutions. However, there has been exponential growth since then, with more than 52 AICTE-approved institutes and 4050 annual intakes at various levels. This growth underlines the critical role of parents in design education, a sector typically characterized by a triangular relationship among students, teachers, and parents. While existing literature predominantly focuses on design pedagogy and student-teacher relations, this research emphasizes the perspective of the parent community. Design education in India is still evolving compared to other professional programs like medical or engineering. Most of the students are first-generation designers. The high fees of private design schools, uncertainty about the returns on educational investment, and unfamiliarity with the design career options lead to a high inhibition level among parents. Moreover, once enrolled, parents may require support in understanding the teaching and learning processes inherent to design education, including the demands of project-based learning beyond college hours. The study investigates parents ‘perspectives at various stages of the design education journey by drawing on a sample of 60. Research elucidated the role of parents in undergraduate design education and proposed solutions to address parents’ concerns. The findings will help improve the functioning and overall pedagogy of design schools by understanding the parents and key stakeholders better.
