Language Learning in the Streaming Era: Leveraging Subtitled Media for Gen-Z
摘要
Gen-Z youth has shown an increased interest towards consuming a range of foreign language media, often informally acquiring basic language skills through its immersive narratives. Practicing these skills in non-speaking regions presents a challenge as modern language apps employ methods that diverge from real world-oriented learning. This paper delves into the intersection of foreign language learning and video-based narratives in web series and movies to cultivate sustained practice. We focus on the bilingual demography in India, particularly second language English-speaking youth. Our methodology includes experimental investigations through eye-tracking studies on subtitle scanning and focus group discussions, along with evaluation methods to define needs and design exercises for elementary language learning and retention. These methods balance learning with enjoyment for Gen-Z’s expectations, considering crucial language skills and interests of Gen-Z learners. Evaluating these mixed methods in context of Gen-Z attitudes provides unique insights and blueprints for enriched approaches to modern language learning in the digital space.
