Challenges in Understanding and Using Design Methods: Perspectives of Design Practitioners
摘要
The overall goal is to develop and validate a user-centric, enhanced repository of design methods, to support design practice and pedagogy. The specific objective of this research is to identify the challenges faced by Indian Design Practitioners (IDPs) in understanding and using design methods, and the features they would expect to have in the enhanced repository. To do this, 38 design practitioners from various fields are interviewed and surveyed to answer the following research questions: (a) what are the challenges faced by IDPs in understanding and using design methods?, (b) what features do IDPs expect to have in an enhanced repository of design methods?, and (c) is there a need for pedagogical support to learn design methods in industry? It was found that IDPs face challenges associated with resource management and problem constraints, in method use, but they do not face any challenges in method understanding. IDPs reported that they expect a mechanism for method recommendation based on problem context, industrial examples of method implementation and image-video-based representation of information in the enhanced repository of design methods and expressed the need for a pedagogical tool to learn design methods in industry. The findings of this research will become the basis for building the enhanced repository, ensuring its user-centricity, and thereby, improving its usability and utility.
