Due to the politically and socially driven transformation of the linear towards a circular economy and the resulting need to adapt consumer behaviour and design patterns, methodological knowledge and its communication are essential for this transformation process (Webster in The circular economy. A wealth of flows, 2nd edn. Ellen MacArthur Foundation Publishing, Cowes, 2017). The contribution therefore deals with the goal-oriented and user-friendly structure of method cards for small development teams and small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME). The focus is on methods for the product development of circular products, for which a selection of circular design methods potentially applicable in SME was compiled in previous contributions (Tellez Nitzling et al. in Requirements for design methods from circular design to support the PD of products for the circular economy in SMEs, 2023; Tellez Nitzling et al. Analysis of existing circular design methods in product development to create a circular design toolkit for SMEs, 2024). From this pool, methods were selected based on which this contribution presents the circular design toolkit (CDTK) that reflects the necessary structure and user-oriented design of method knowledge for application. From this, a proposal is made for the design of method cards on which the methods and their application are conveyed. The presented approach reflects the need for user-oriented preparation and presentation of methodological knowledge by means of the design of cards on which the selected methods are clearly presented and their application explained. Furthermore, the realisation of method cards with online access for SME is envisaged to significantly improve and accelerate their dissemination and thus enable a holistic transformation to a circular society. Only by imparting methodological knowledge to SME can their products and business models be sustainably adapted and thus drive forward the transition of the entire economy.
