In the light of global literature on juxtaposed methodologies, this study explores and implicates traditional sketching as a cornerstone to visual communication design education. This research investigates the importance of sketching in the past and present to find out what differentiates and therefore imparts educational significance upon existing practices. The main questions asked are the following: how effective is a traditional versus digital sketching approach during the ideation phase, and what impact does it have on creativity and innovation. The drawing practices of artists, designers, and communication design students are assessed through qualitative research methods based on interviews, discussions, and observations. Moreover, the results suggest that traditional sketching promotes better ideation and helps to drive creative processes more systematically and confidently.
