A Comprehensive Study: Horticulture Education and Environmental Impact Through a XR Approach

In the contemporary world, the horticulture community is pivotal for sustainability and environmental initiatives, yet struggles with limited online presence and disjointed networks. This design research paper aims to address this challenge through a hypothetical innovative integration of Extended Reality (XR).The horticulture community, despite its importance, often operates in isolated pockets, hindering collective knowledge exchange and collaboration. To remedy this, the study proposes a hypothetical XR-based system employing machine learning and computer vision algorithms. This system enhances the exchange of comprehensive plant information and introduces an engaging XR experience where users actively participate in tree planting, earning points convertible into a virtual currency. The research strives to bridge this existing gap by hypothetically integrating XR technology, with specific objectives such as facilitating plant information sharing, incentivizing real-world environmental actions, and building a virtual community. The proposed XR integration envisions transforming the horticulture community into an interconnected ecosystem. Through a holistic design framework, members collaboratively contribute to sustainable practices and environmental conservation. The approach has been tallied through a two fold survey method, comprising of quantitative gathering of data through a questionnaire among 100 individuals. Qualitative responses were recorded of 30 individuals on the feasibility of the design approach. This research proposes a hypothetical XR integration as a catalyst for cultivating connectivity, fostering shared responsibility, and propelling the horticulture community into a digitally connected era. By envisioning this innovative approach, the study aims to inspire collaborative efforts, leveraging technology to enhance plant education, incentivize environmental actions, and create a cohesive virtual space for the horticulture community.
