Revisiting Current Standards Relevant to User-Friendly Design of Human–Robot Control Interfaces

In the modern industrial scenario, robots have been utilized extensively in different sectors, such as manufacturing, construction, health care, defense, aerospace, and agriculture. The current market value of the robotic industry is approximately USD 24 billion. Operators manipulate/navigate the robots/robotic devices located adjacently or remotely using physical or digital devices. Engineers are currently developing technologically advanced human–robot control interfaces (HRCIs), which are good from the functionality perspective but not user-friendly. Therefore, proactive ergonomics consideration in designing and developing HRCIs is essential to ensure usability. As there is no pre-set guideline or specific standard to make HRCIs human-centric, it is the need of the hour to revisit available national/international standards that might be relevant to the user-friendly design of HRCIs. A detailed literature review pertaining to various standards was conducted to identify the most relevant ones that could be utilized for the current research. Identified standards were broadly classified under different headings based on their relevancy to various human factor issues. Further, the current research highlighted the need to develop dedicated standards/guidelines for HRCIs and proposed plausible ways forward to come up with such standards.
