Exploring the Intersection of Design and Technology for Ageing in Place: A Focus on IOT-Based Smart Homes

This paper presents a case study analysis of smart home technology in relation to ageing in place. In recent years, IoT-based smart home devices have emerged as a means of supporting older adults in areas such as health monitoring, comfort, assistive care, and recreation, all of which are essential components of ageing in place. However, user acceptability, behaviours, and challenges from the perspective of both end-users and designers remain less explored. In this study, we analyse representative cases of smart homes for older people, focusing on the ease of use of smart home devices, digital interactions and interfaces, and user behaviours related to the adoption of such technologies. We observed that older adults frequently encounter challenges in using and accepting smart home technologies due to a decline in their cognitive abilities, which can ultimately lead to the abandonment or discontinuation of these applications. Based on our findings, we suggest that adding physical and tangible user interfaces can have positive implications for adopting smart home technologies among older adults. These interfaces can help bridge the gap between the digital and physical worlds, making it easier for older individuals to interact with and understand the technology. Finally, our study highlights the importance of considering the needs and behaviours of end users in the design and development of smart home technologies for ageing in place.
