This research paper explores the symbiotic relationship between the Nyishi people and their environment, emphasising how their architectural practices contribute to sustainable living and resilience against climatic challenges. Utilising a comprehensive methodology that includes architectural documentation, site observations, in-depth interviews with community members, and photogrammetric documentation, this study delves into the indigenous strategies that make Nyishi architecture uniquely adaptive to its climatic context. The research focuses on the community's use of local materials, innovative construction techniques, and the spatial organisation of dwellings that collectively enhance environmental sustainability and climate resilience. The findings reveal how Nyishi's reliance on bamboo and other locally sourced materials contributes to the sustainability of their constructions and provides significant resilience against natural disasters, such as earthquakes and floods. The elevated design of their structures, aimed at flood mitigation, and the orientation for optimal thermal comfort and ventilation underscore a sophisticated understanding of living in harmony with nature. The photogrammetric documentation, combined with architectural documentation and site observations, offers detailed insights into the physical characteristics of Nyishi architecture. At the same time, interviews with community members enrich the study with cultural and historical contexts. By presenting a detailed analysis of the climate-responsive elements in Nyishi architecture, this paper aims to bridge the gap between indigenous knowledge and contemporary architectural practices. It argues for a more inclusive approach to sustainable design that incorporates the wisdom of indigenous cultures, offering valuable insights for developing climate-resilient architectures worldwide. The findings underscore the importance of preserving and learning from indigenous practices as a vital component of global sustainability efforts, advocating for their integration into modern architectural design discourse.
