This paper addresses the escalating proliferation of three-dimensional (3D) cultural heritage models and the consequential necessity for centralized digital repositories to ensure their preservation and accessibility. Specifically, it advocates for open repositories of scientifically validated 3D models, analogous to traditional academic journals, to streamline procedures for preservation, peer review, dissemination, and updates. At the core of this paper lies the research question concerning the challenges associated with establishing open repositories for 3D cultural heritage models. It aims to pinpoint the technical hurdles that must be surmounted to materialize the concept of centralized 3D archives and explore potential solutions to these challenges. The methodology employed encompasses providing an overview of the virtual heritage discipline and conducting an initial survey of virtual heritage practitioners to discern their requirements for consolidated 3D archives. Additionally, existing 3D cultural heritage repositories undergo scrutiny to identify technical impediments requiring attention. Through this analysis, the paper endeavors to illuminate key research obstacles and suggest strategies for establishing an ideal repository. The findings derived from this investigation involve the recognition of technical obstacles like digital privileges administration, depiction of uncertainty in 3D reconstructions, version management, enduring conservation, compatibility, and exploration of 3D models. Furthermore, the paper delves into the incorporation of computational examination instruments and proposes structural frameworks for a peer-assessed 3D depository. The significance of these results lies in their potential to guide the development of open repositories for 3D cultural heritage models, addressing critical technical challenges and propelling advancements in the field of virtual heritage preservation. By proposing solutions to these obstacles, the paper contributes to the establishment of standardized procedures for preserving and disseminating 3D cultural heritage assets, thereby augmenting accessibility and fostering collaboration in the field.
