Originated more than two hundred years ago in the Chettinad area of Tamil Nadu, Athangudi tiles have played an integral role in representing the rich heritage and culture of the Southern region of India. The tiles have been named after the area (Athangudi) where they have been manufactured since their origin. Athangudi tiles are highly regarded for their hallmark quality, durability, and sustainability. The traditional processes of making these tiles still continues till date maintaining the legacy of the Chettiars. The colors, designs, patterns, molds, raw materials are still of the bygone era with minimal modernization. This research provides deep insights into the significance, production and the process that goes into the making of Athangudi tiles. The study aims to understand the skill and process for making Athangudi tiles. This study also documents the experiences of the artisans involved. The data collection method includes semi-structured interviews to understand the origin, prominence, cultural influence, financial aspects and the overall manufacturing of the tiles. The data collected was analyzed qualitatively through context analysis. This research concludes with the reflection of Chettinad region in the tile design. The tiles are best example of rich architectural heritage of the Chettiars and local craftsmanship. Artisans turn locally available materials into handmade floor tiles with bare hands. Hence, the tile manufacturing process is completely eco-friendly and sustainable in nature. Environment and sustainability have taken a center stage in recent times evoking a sense of eco-friendly homes for the current generations.
