Gaming Activity Intervention for Fall Prevention in Older Adults

One potentially effective strategy for enhancing health and well-being in the senior population is the combination of interactive games with physical activities. This study provides an extensive analysis of gaming therapies designed with older adults in mind, focusing on their effectiveness in enhancing physical activity, cognitive function, and social engagement. To provide interactive gaming-like experiences, the activity uses various sensors and devices integrated into a mat. The mat is designed with flex, pressure, accelerometer, infrared, and hall-effect sensors strategically integrated to detect a range of movements, such as bending, applying pressure, orienting, approaching, and magnetic interactions. The sensors allow older adults to use the activity mat for a variety of activities and games that focus on various elements of physical health and cognitive capacities. The interactive nature of these gaming interventions not only encourages physical activity but also stimulates cognitive function through problem-solving tasks, memory challenges, and decision-making activities embedded within the games. Furthermore, the social aspect of gaming fosters social interaction and camaraderie among participants, reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness commonly experienced by the elderly.
