Currently, physical mock-ups are primarily constructed to evaluate or communicate already-formed concepts, with limited qualitative studies conducted in academic contexts. The research underscores the unique functions of physical mock-ups in facilitating the development of comprehensive mental models for creative interventions, appealing to multiple sensory modalities. Inexpensive, easily and quickly constructed physical mock-ups paired with the partially complete ideas generated through sketching synergistically enhance the quality of the ideas. Utilizing a qualitative approach, thematic analysis was employed to delve into student projects focused on designing simple products. Design tasks encompassed selecting a simple product for re-design, conducting research, ideating, and finalizing concepts. Upon completing the research phase and transitioning to ideation, students were introduced to the distinct advantages of physical mock-ups, encouraging iterative switching between sketching and mock-up making. Thematic patterns were identified to elucidate the positioning and contributions of physical mock-ups. The paper’s first section outlines the pedagogical approach, study framework, design tasks, and data collection procedures. The subsequent section delineates a six-phase thematic analysis model by Braun and Clarke, resulting in themes. The re-interpretation of data for themes is detailed in the third section. Findings affirm that initial research serves as a catalyst for ideation, with resistance to creating physical mock-ups mitigated over time. This leads to iterative switching between sketches and physical mock-ups, fostering a reflective and evaluative feedback loop. Early incorporation of physical mock-ups during ideation enhances the number of functional ideas, builds more options for the selection process, and thus has a discreet improvement in the quality of the ideas generated.
