Storybooks play an important role in engaging children at personal, social, intellectual, and cognitive levels. But visually impaired (VI) children miss out on the relationship between words and pictures as they rely more on auditory and tactile cues. Also, their reading and exploration styles differ significantly from people without disabilities and hence books need to be designed based on their needs. The objective of the study was to develop design criteria for tactile storybooks using user-centered design research. The methodology included an ethnographic study with a set of VI children aged 6–10 years at the National Association for the Blind (NAB) in Delhi, India. It included participatory and non-participatory observation, interactive workshop, design workshop, stakeholder interaction, and Braille-learning. It was followed by classification of design criteria, brainstorming of concepts, and prototype development and testing. Some of the findings were two tactile illustrations per page, contrasting colors, page size to accommodate palm size, placement of Braille text below English text, and thick pages.
