A Systematic Review of Evaluation Methods for Sustainable Product Development

Sustainable product development (SPD) aims to minimize environmental impacts while meeting traditional design criteria like functionality, quality, features, costs, and time to market. Green design, eco-design, cradle-to-cradle, design for sustainability and design for environment are some terms often associated with SPD to describe methods used to produce products with a reduced overall environmental impact. Many of these approaches look at the entire lifecycle of the product. However, the products’ end-of-life (EoL) destinations remain uncertain during this initial design stage. Furthermore, the available data for any sustainability assessment is inadequate at the fuzzy front end of design. This paper explores approaches to design evaluation for SPD at the fuzzy front end of design. We intend to analyze these approaches and uncover how data inadequacy and fuzzy EoL scenarios are dealt with in these evaluation methods. To achieve the above objectives, we conducted a systematic review of papers published in the last 15 years in SCOPUS on product design evaluation for SPD. The literature analysis showed that the life cycle assessment approach in design evaluation methodologies dominates existing research. We have also discussed the future research directions that can be taken in evaluation methodologies.
