Even though air embolism is uncommon, if it is not recognized and treated promptly, it can cause irreversible harm to a person’s body, even leading to death. This study focuses on the causes of air embolism and the prevention techniques that can reduce air embolism caused by human/equipment mistakes. The literature on this topic is quite limited. The research found that medical professionals work under stressful conditions, which allows for human error. It was also concluded that air embolism is an issue that can be avoided if the healthcare professional can pay a little more adequate attention throughout the entire infusion procedure. Air embolism can also be avoided with the use of commercially available add-on equipment for intravenous infusion systems that traps or removes air bubbles from the flow of intravenous fluid before it reaches the end of its tubing. The study can help designers and engineers to develop low-cost add-on equipment or a completely new Intravenous infusion set that is efficient in removing air bubbles.
