A Visual Design Investigation on a Two-Wheeler Instrument Panel Using the Golden Ratio

Instrument panels are an essential component in two-wheelers. Providing necessary information and receiving commands through buttons/switches makes it easier for the driver to interact with the vehicle. The design of instrument panels has evolved rapidly with technology, moving from analogue meters to touchscreen displays. As the two-wheelers become more sophisticated, more information is made available, such as vehicle information, navigation, and weather. This leads us to questions such as: what is an optimized design for a two-wheeler instrument panel? How does human–computer interaction (HCI), as part of design, work in such a product? What influence do design elements and design principles play in this? To address the aforementioned questions, this paper discusses the use of the golden ratio in the two-wheeler instrument panel to understand its role in design aspects such as layout, composition, proportion, and hierarchy. The study was conducted on the Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycle’s instrument panel. The result discusses how certain aspects of the golden ratio are being used to create an attention-seeking design of an instrument panel.
