This research, which is centered in a first- and second-generation warfare era, aims to understand how historic forts in India were a dialogue between ancient and medieval warfare technology, and the architecture for defense and control. Within this research, the term military architecture refers to the complete gamut of building design, spatial, and geographical orientation of any piece of architecture wherein defense and control becomes central to the design thought. This may in be reference to forts, fortresses, watch towers, garrisons, etc. Warfare technology refers to the continuous development of weapons and other means of warfare, which is used to wage war against state entities. Warfare and weapons design centers around effective ways to neutralize opposition, as it moved from prehistoric weapons to bows and arrows and swords, to more advanced gunpowder-based weaponry. Each of these “generations of warfare” was responded by architects and designers of military architecture of its respective time periods, by conceiving architecture appropriate for its defense. Hence, through history, architecture and warfare technology has been a concise dialogue with each other. Each architectural element in a military architectural system is a response against these constant design development of technology against war. This research will uncover these conscious design choices, through which military architectural systems were conceived, implemented upon buildings, and eventually became integral part of forts and fortresses across India. The implication of this design development is seen in the conservation and preservation of these technological development of military architectural systems, as prioritization of architectural systems with right direction toward structures would enable more succinct look at heritage, with a precise direction of efforts.
