This chapter examines the vital role of architectural design in addressing marine ecosystem degradation through the Master of Architecture Design Studio on Floating Artificial Reefs, called Martine Utopia at RMIT University. As climate change threatens coral reefs, architecture is redefined beyond spatial design to become an agent of ecological restoration and resilience. The studio challenges students to integrate computational methods, biomimicry, and environmental data-driven design to develop floating infrastructures and artificial reef structures that support marine biodiversity while fostering human engagement with fragile marine environments. Through analyses of student projects, including Laminarosity, Undamaging, Heronia, and Mantaverse and Florid Utopia, the chapter highlights innovative design approaches that synthesize ecological functionality with cultural, educational, and socio-economic considerations. This work underscores how architectural pedagogy fosters sustainable design practices and advances a paradigm where architecture actively contributes to environmental stewardship. By framing artificial reefs as both ecological interventions and cultural artefacts, the studio exemplifies how design can shape resilient futures, bridging human and non-human habitats in the face of climate change.
