Design and Fabrication of Floating Artificial Reefs: Enhancing Biodiversity and Food Production

The expansion of aquaculture and renewable energy infrastructure into offshore environments offers a unique opportunity to integrate ecological innovation and engineering expertise to address critical environmental and economic challenges. This chapter explores the development of floating artificial reefs (FARs) as a novel approach to enhance high-value food production, support marine biodiversity, and provide ecosystem services while mitigating the environmental impacts of offshore infrastructure. By examining the historical evolution and ecological benefits of artificial reefs, this chapter highlights the advancements in design, including state-of-the-art technologies such as modular construction and 3D printing, that enable FARs to function effectively as standalone habitats or co-located systems alongside offshore energy projects. Regulatory and governance challenges associated with deploying FARs are examined, emphasizing the need for multidisciplinary collaboration among engineers, ecologists, policymakers, and industry stakeholders. Case studies and research gaps identified by the Blue Economy CRC are provided to illustrate the potential for FARs to transform aquaculture and offshore development practices, and support sustainable marine industries. By combining ecological restoration and technological innovation, FARs present an opportunity to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship, paving the way for a more resilient and sustainable blue economy.
