As demand for sustainable food sources rises, particularly in the finfish sector, aquaculture is shifting from sheltered, coastal locations to offshore environments. This transition is driven by the need for increased output, improved fish welfare, and reduced environmental impact. Offshore fish farming presents opportunities for large-scale production in open waters, but it also introduces challenges such as harsh marine conditions, technological complexity, and sustainability requirements. Various innovative solutions, including both moored and mobile units, are being developed to address these challenges. This chapter explores the novel technologies being tested, with a focus on the operational parameters critical to the design and success of offshore aquaculture systems. We will also examine key factors like location, manning, and operational concepts that must be optimized to ensure efficient and environmentally responsible aquaculture. Finally essential factors for offshore fish farming including main concepts, design and fabrication as well as in-operations specifics are illustrated by an in-depth description of the two pioneering ocean fish farming installations in successful operation.
